Six men were arrested and charged with possessing explosives and stolen military equipment that could have been used to disrupt the upcoming Summit of the Americas here, Canadian police said today.

The six are believed to be leaders of a militant group that has been under police surveillance as part of an inquiry that began some six months ago.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police spokesman Mr Mike Gaudet said equipment seized included smoke bombs, timers, incendiary equipment, shields and gas masks.

The six were accused of possessing explosives and theft of military equipment, according to Mr Robert Poeti, a spokesman for the provincial police.

The third Summit of the Americas - that brings together leaders from 34 North, Central and South American nations, will be held from tomorrow to Sunday and will focus on economic integration and democracy in the Western hemisphere.
