Two Czech nationals were killed instantly when the car in which they were travelling went out of control on the N5 near Charlestown, Co Mayo early yesterday.

The crash occurred just before 2am on a bend at Laveymore about half a mile on the Ballaghaderreen side of Charlestown.

The victims were named as Filip Marecek (31) and Peter Valasek (34). They had been travelling from Ballaghaderreen towards Charlestown.

Both men, whose addresses in Ireland were given as Brackloon, Charlestown, had been working in the area.

It is understood that Mr Valasek was a married man with a family while Mr Marecek was single.

The stretch of road where the crash occurred is to be downgraded once work on the Charlestown bypass, an 18-kilometre stretch of new roadway costing €63 million, is completed. Work on the project is to get under way later this year.

Also yesterday a man believed to be in his early 20s was killed in a collision in Co Tipperary.

The collision involving three cars occurred at Kilcooley, Gortnahoe, on the Urlingford to Ballingarry Road around 1.45pm.

Gardaí have not yet released the name of the man, who was driving one of the cars. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Cashel hospital.

Three other people were transferred to hospital, two of them with serious injuries.

Gardaí named the woman killed in Co Tipperary on Friday afternoon as 82-year-old Teresa Delaney of Dromkeenan, Brosna, Birr, Co Offaly.

Ms Delaney was involved in a collision with a van at 5pm as she was driving on the N62 at Loughnavatta between Birr and Roscrea, Co Tipperary.

She was alone in the car at the time. Her body was removed to Nenagh hospital for postmortem examination.

The driver of the van was taken to Nenagh hospital with leg injuries and was later transferred to Limerick Regional Hospital where his injuries were said not to be life threatening.

On Saturday 57-year-old Séamus Walsh of Drumbride, Drumconrath, Co Meath was killed in a two-car collision at Dunheeda, near Kingscourt, Co Cavan. The two-car crash occurred at 11.25pm.

Two men in the second vehicle were injured and taken to Navan hospital where their condition yesterday was said to be stable.

In Co Down a man was killed in the early hours of yesterday when his car collided with a minibus near Newcastle. The minibus driver was hospitalised.

The deaths bring to 25 the number of people killed on the Republic's roads this year. Some 33 people died on the State's roads in January 2005, which was then a three-year high.
