A man who locked a woman into her bedroom and raped her after he drank lager, vodka and tequila and smoked cannabis has received a six-year sentence.

Mark Doyle (31), Kippure Park, Finglas, pleaded guilty at the Central Criminal Court to six counts of rape, sexual assault, false imprisonment and assault causing harm to the woman in August 2004.

He had 15 previous convictions since 1984 for robbery, road-traffic offences, drink-related offences and having implements with the intention of committing theft.

Dr Brian McCaffrey, consultant psychiatrist, said Doyle needed treatment for his chronic alcoholism and his "unresolved deep-rooted anger" towards women arising from his mother leaving the family years ago. His amnesia when interviewed by gardaí could have arisen from his huge alcohol and cannabis consumption.

Dr McCaffrey told Blaise O'Carroll SC, defending, that Doyle was "full of remorse" and if got treatment for his problems, he could be "a decent enough citizen".

Mr Justice Paul Carney certified Doyle as a sex offender and said he found Dr McCaffrey's evidence to be of great assistance. He suspended the final 18 months of the rape sentences in view of his early guilty plea and directed he undergo three years of post-release supervision.

Det Sgt Matthew Murphy told Tom Creed SC, prosecuting, that Doyle and the woman had been friends for about seven months. Doyle had not drunk alcohol for some time before August 29th, 2004, and became jealous when other men spoke to her that night.

They moved three times and Doyle became aggressive with her. He shouted at her and scratched her face in a taxi returning to her home. She ran off while he paid the taxi but he caught up with her and ripped her clothes, leaving her semi-naked.

Neighbours contacted gardaí who arrested him and held him for some hours. Gardaí drove him to Finglas with his undertaking he would not return to the woman's home. He asked to be dropped off near his father's house.

Some time later the woman heard a knock on her door and found Doyle there. She admitted him after he threatened he would put the door in. He then locked her bedroom door and raped her.

Det Sgt Murphy said examination of hairs found in the apartment proved they had been pulled from her head. He said Doyle had been in custody since his arrest and his guilty plea had taken a huge weight off the victim's shoulders.
