MCD concerts and Wonderland Promotions will have to pay up to £50,000 to Meath County Council if they do not clean up Slane town sufficiently after the second U2 concert.

The much-anticipated second concert was announced today by the County Council and tickets went on sale throughout the country. The concert will be played on Saturday, September 1st.

Spokesman for Meath County Council, Mr Kevin Stewart, told ireland.comit had reviewed a number of submissions with regard to the planned concert prior to today's announcement including one from the Slane Tidy Towns group.

Mr Stewart said the group were not completely opposed to the proposed gig but had asked that if it did go ahead the event organisers would be forced to clean up Slane town afterwards.

Mr Stewart said the County Council had, therefore, included a condition in the license that the promoters pay the council a £50,000 deposit which would be refunded in full if Slane was sufficiently tidied by Monday September 2nd.

"We will take some or all of that money if Slane is not tidied to our satisfaction", he added.

The promotion companies will also have to provide complete event management plans for both concerts, and have two weeks from today to forward organisation details for the second concert to the council.

Mr Stewart said that two other residents had also raised concerns regarding camping in the area and access in and out of the town for locals over that weekend.

But he said only one resident had made an "outright objection" to the proposed concert. Mr Stewart said one resident claimed Lord Henry Mount Charles, proprietor of Slane Castle, had reneged on an agreement made with Slane residents in the 1980’s not to host more than one concert a year.

Lord Mount Charles was unavailable for comment today.
