A company that makes videotape and video cassettes has announced it is to shut its Sligo factory with the loss of 91 jobs.

Saehan Media Ireland said it will close its plant at Hazelwood at the end of April due to a worldwide drop in demand for video products and increasing manufacturing costs.

Due to the popularity of DVD and other media, the demand for videotape fell by 30 per cent last year. A drop of 40 per cent is expected this year.

The plant's operating loss was more than €10 million in 2005. The previous year's loss was €2.4 million.
