The economic slowdown in Germany and the 12-country euro zone weighed on the German labour market in May, official figures showed today.
The number of people registered as unemployed in Germany stood at 3.720 million in May - 9 per cent of the working population in raw, or seasonally unadjusted, terms.
"The economic slowdown is leaving its mark on the labour market," said deputy president of the labour office Mr Heinrich Alt.
Adjusted for seasonal factors, the pan-German jobless total rose to 3.829 million in May from 3.811 million in April, and the adjusted jobless rate stagnated at 9.3 per cent, the Bundesbank calculated.
In the formerly communist east Germany, 1.366 million people were out of work on an adjusted basis, up from 1.360 million the previous month, and the jobless rate edged up to 17.4 per cent from 17.3 per cent.
