ONE OF the largest fish kills in recent history took place in Limerick this week, after 50,000 gallons of farmyard slurry entered a major trout and salmon spawning river near Newcastle West.

The Shannon Regional Fisheries Board is investigating the spill at Ballynabearna, Ardagh, on Tuesday. Officials describe a “complete wipeout” of fish. The slurry entered the Dooalley River, and then the Arra and Deel rivers.

A spokesperson said the incident was “really tragic”, and called for “anyone working with machinery or effluent tanks” to ensure everything was secure.
