PARALYMPICS:Jason Smyth secured his second gold medal of the Paralympic Games when winning the T13 200m final in world record time in front of 91,000 spectators at the Bird's Nest Stadium in Beijing. The Derry sprinter raised the bar with a record time in the heats yesterday but smashed that by 0.38 seconds when running 21.43 today.
The 20-year-old won gold in the T13 100 metres on Saturday in a record 10.62 seconds. To get to that final, he beat his own record of 10.81 in the qualifying heats, meaning he has set four world records in four races.
Speaking after the event Smyth said "Things went very well, I am very pleased. After the false start I knew I had a good start but had to do it again.
"I had to attack the bend to put the guys under pressure; it's where I would be the strongest. The bend went well and I had a good lead into the straight.
"This is what the whole year has been about, right for this moment and this success."
It is Ireland's fifth medal of the games after Gay Shelly's bronze in the boccia, Darragh McDonald's silver in the the 400-metre freestyle (S6) at the Water Cube, and Smyth's room-mate Michael McKillop's 800-metre gold.
Meanwhile, in the 7-a-side football Ireland faced the Netherlands, in the 5th/6th place play off. The game finished 4-2 to the Dutch, with the Irish goals coming from Finbar O'Riordan and Gary Messett.
Afterwards Irish captain Aidan Brennan said: "The 4-2 result is a bit flattering to the Dutch I think; two late goals in the first half kind of upset us but in the second half we went out again and gave it everything; we just came up short on the day".
Tralee's Roy Guerin, was in action at the Bird's Nest stadium this morning competing in the 100m (T53 Class) but unfortunately his time of 16.59secs was not enough to see him progress to the final.
Orla Barry from Cork, competing in the discus, threw a best distance of 27.08m to finish fifth in the final.
The Irish team will arrive at Dublin airport on Friday evening for their homecoming.
