A new award to celebrate "hidden heroes of everyday life" has been announced by Dublin City Council.

The Good Citizen Awards aim to acknowledge and celebrate the contribution made by “ordinary people” to the city.

“We are asking the public to nominate ordinary people who by their actions and contributions make this city an extraordinary place to live,” the council said.

“These individuals may lead, motivate or inspire others to contribute to the creation of a smarter, caring city guided by values that are not always recognised by society.”

Speaking in support of the new award, entertainer Keith Duffy said: "We all know someone who is a hidden hero within our communities. These people have one thing in common – they have put others first."

Nominations open on February 15th and will be accepted until March 18th. There are nine categories for nomination, and winners will be selected by an independent adjudication panel with awards presented at a ceremony in the Mansion House in May. Winners will be presented with a Good Citizen Award pin.

Nominations can be completed online at dublincity.ie/goodcitizen. Forms are also available from all Dublin City Council offices, HSE Centres and Garda stations.
