The Cabinet has agreed that Ireland will accept an additional 250 refugees.

Tánaiste Frances Fitzgerald received approval at this morning's meeting for the move.

It is understood this is in addition to the 4,000 committed to by the Government under the EU relocation programme.

The additional 250 will be taken from refugee camps in Lebanon.

Ms Fitzgerald is also understood to have told the Cabinet the refugees and migrants committed to by the Government will begin to arrive in the coming weeks.

There had been significant delays to their arrival in Ireland.

In May, just 10 of the 2,622 asylum seekers that Ireland pledged to accept from Italy and Greece under the EU relocation programme have arrived.
