The death has taken place of college lecturer and journalist Eddie Holt, a former television critic and columnist for The Irish Times. Mr Holt (60) wrote for the newspaper from December 1994 until the mid-2000s.

He was earlier television critic for the Irish Independent, between 1988 and 1994.

Mr Holt, originally from Drogheda, was a lecturer in the school of communications in Dublin City University, where he taught ethics, writing and literary journalism. He died following a long struggle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP).

The Irish secretary of the National Union of Journalists, Séamus Dooley, paid tribute to his former colleague.
