The incoming bishop of Kildare and Leighlin, Bishop Denis Nulty, has paid tribute to the community support offered to the family of the murdered Chada brothers who were resident in the diocese.
Last week Sanjeev Chada was charged with the murders of his sons 10-year-old Eoghan and five-year-old Ruairí at a special sitting of Swinford District Court. Their bodies had been found in the boot of the crashed family car in Westport, Co Mayo.
Bishop Nulty made the remarks in his ordination speech yesterday. “How acutely aware we all are in recent days of that very need of one another as evidenced by the small community of Ballinkillen out the road in Bagenalstown Parish as they surrounded Kathleen Chada and her family after the horrendous loss of Eoghan and Ruairí,” he said.
“Our only role at this time is to extend the comfort of our prayers to all who are in any way affected by this tragedy.”
Archbishop Diarmuid Martin was chief consecrator at the ordination ceremony, assisted by the papal nuncio Archbishop Charles Brown and Bishop Michael Smith. Cardinal Seán Brady and Cardinal Desmond Connell were also present.
Bishop Nulty served as parish priest in St Mary’s, Drogheda, from 1998 until his present appointment.
