A Waterford man has drowned in Thailand.

The victim has been named as David Houlihan (24) from Dungarvan, Co Waterford.

Dungarvan GAA club has been open since 7.30pm for people to come together to remember him.

A post on their Facebook page reads: “The Club will be open this evening from 7.30pm onwards for anyone who would like to come together and support one another on this tough time for us all on the sad passing of David Houlihan RIP. Due to a Bereavement ALL Club activities are suspended.”

The Department of Foreign Affairs said it is aware of the case and is providing consular assistance to his family.

Dungarvan Fine Gael councillor Damian Geoghegan, who played for Dungarvan, paid tribute to Mr Houlihan.

“He was a friendly, popular young man with a happy dispotion and a very wide circle of friends,” he said. “The local community here in Dungarvan are in deep shock at his untimely passing. I wish to extend my deepest sympathies to his family and friends.”
