Solaris Mobile, a joint-venture set up by two satellite communications firms is to base itself in Dublin in a move that will create 50 high-skilled jobs over the next three years.
The development is being supported by IDA Ireland. Solaris Mobile was formed in 2006 by SES Astra and the Eutelsat Communications to provide a new European satellite-based service.
The company is currently developing a new satellite for launch next year and will use it for the provision of TV, video and radio broadcasts.
The system will also allow the deployment of TV material on mobile phones. In a statement today the company said the new staff would be third level graduates with a background in the space, telecoms, regulatory or mobile sectors.
Steve Maine, CEO of Solaris Mobile said the decision to base the company’s corporate headquarters in Ireland has followed detailed assessment of a number of locations across Europe.
“We decided that Ireland would deliver this project to the tight deadlines required and would be best at ensuring its successful development to the most stringent standards,” he said.
Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise Mary Coughlan welcomed the development, noting that it was the first investment by international satellite operators in the State.
