Two soldiers have resigned over accounting irregularities at an Army barracks in the Southern Command, it emerged today.
The two quartermasters were responsible for paying for reservists' meals but an internal Army investigation revealed the soldiers were claiming more money than they should have been.
The soldiers had been leaving money on deposit with hotels in the area, the investigation discovered.
The investigation was launched and gardai were informed after concerns about large scale embezzlement of funds were raised more than two months ago.
A Defence Forces spokesman said today there had been no criminal activity, and no impropriety on the part of the hotels.
Around €70,000 has been returned to the Defence Forces by three hotels and the two soldiers have voluntarily applied for their discharge, he confirmed.
