Bunia - About 300 soldiers from the army of the former Zairean president, Mobutu Sese Seko, have surrendered to rebels in the past week after hiding in the bush for nearly four years, rebel leaders said yesterday.

"There are more coming. Altogether there is a battalion of about 700 men," Mr Dominique Kanku, the foreign affairs spokesman for the Congo Liberation Front (FLC), told reporters in the rebel-held town of Bunia. "They want to go into the FLC and they are going to be retrained by FLC commanders," Mr Kanku said.
