MR RICHIE BARRON

The Donegal cattle dealer whose death on the roadside in 1996, and its treatment as a murder inquiry, led to the tribunal. He was described by Mr Peter Charleton SC as "an innocent victim of whatever killed him".

One of the two members of the Garda Síochána against whom serious allegations are made. These include the planting of "subversive paraphernalia" both in the State and in Northern Ireland. He vigorously denies the allegations.

SUPT KEVIN LENNON

He was Garda McMahon's superior officer and worked closely with him. It has been alleged that the planting of the objects was intended to secure his promotion. He also vigorously denies these allegations.

MS ADRIENNE McGLINCHEY

She is a young woman who was claimed to be a Provisional IRA informer by Garda McMahon, and who was arrested a number of times with various objects that looked suspicious. They usually turned out to be harmless. She has alleged that she was encouraged to be involved in hoax bomb activity by Garda McMahon.

MRS SHEENAGH McMAHON

She is the estranged wife of Garda McMahon, and the source of a number of serious allegations against him and Supt Lennon, including the alleged planting of subversive materials. She withdrew her statement at one stage, but subsequently reinstated it.

ASSISTANT COMMISSIONER KEVIN CARTY

He conducted two inquiries into allegations against members of the Garda Síochána in Donegal, which are quoted in the opening statement from Mr Charleton. In his second report, sent to the DPP, he concluded: "The full truth remains yet to be uncovered."
