Martin Black, general manager of Eason's on O'Connell Street, said he had never seen anything like it.

"The minute we sensed there could be trouble, we pulled the shutters down at about 1.30pm. We asked people out on the street if they wanted to come into the store for safety. There were a lot of elderly people and mothers with children. It was quite frightening."

A security guard with Carroll's gift shop on O'Connell Street said the store had not received any advance warning of trouble "But fair play to the gardaí. I'd say they had an idea there might be a protest against the parade but had no idea of the scale of it," he said.
