Something to `Survey'

The bouncy castle is about to come down in Meetinghouse Square

The bouncy castle is about to come down in Meetinghouse Square. In the Gallery of Photography, a show of a different sort is about to go on view. Leisa Caslick from Sydney and Paolo Scalera from Brindisi catch the colourful pneumatic maze called "Luminarium" just before it disappears.

Now for the collection of photographs, called "Survey", with titles such as Modern Warfare, Space of Doubt, The Aura of Crises and The Hinterland, which has just gone on show. Mary McIntyre's first solo exhibition in Dublin is officially open.

The work of the Belfast-born artist "makes you feel empty", says one photographer, Sinead Harold. Louise Murphy, Anne Marie O'Donnell and Emma Duggan, hunkered on the gallery's floor having a chat, find her work "interesting".

The artist herself says: "I tend to, recently, not have any figures in the work so I'm looking at spaces and concentrating on the presence or the atmosphere that is in the space. Some [of the places] have been abandoned or closed or left lying dormant for a number of years." Oh, dear.

One critic says that "though not made with the express purpose of commenting on the political situation in Northern Ireland, they do take on a particular resonance in the context of recent events in the North."

There are plenty of Northerners at the opening to cheer the artist on, including: Hugh Mulholland, director of the Ormeau Baths Gallery and McIntyre's husband; artist Susan Philipsz, who is off to New York for one year on a scholarship shortly; Eilis O Baoill, artist and vice chairwoman of the Arts Council in Northern Ireland who has worked with McIntyre before, and Longford artist Shane Cullen.

Art critic Ciaran Bennett is here, waving the flag for the Irish section of AICA, the international association of art critics, which is having a symposium next month, featuring the American critic, Donald Kuspit.

And Tanya Kiang, director of the gallery, has even more weighty matters on her mind. She and historian Niall O Ciosain are getting married this Tuesday - after 10 years, she says. They'll honeymoon on the River Shannon. Comhghairdeachas to them both and to Mary McIntyre, whose show will run until September 23rd.
