A 23-year-old man has appeared in court in Limerick charged with the murder of his father last year.

Gerard McNamara, of Cedar Court, Kennedy Park, Limerick is charged with the murder of Joseph O'Donnell at his home on Hyde Road, Limerick on October 1st, 2010.

The 48-year-old died from head injuries.

Det Gda Pat Whelan of Roxboro Garda station, gave evidence at Limerick District Court of arresting and formally charging the accused at 10.20am.

The court heard the 23-year-old made no reply to the charge.

Solicitor Chris Lynch was assigned to represent Mr McNamara.

Judge Eamon O'Brien remanded him in custody until October 18th next when he will appear before the same court again via video link.

The accused remained silent throughout the brief court hear hearing.
