Sotheby's sends valuer to Dublin to seek out rock memorabilia

Sotheby's, the London auction house, is sending a valuer to Dublin in search of Irish rock memorabilia.

His visit offers prodigious collectors a rare opportunity to convert a lifetime's passion into hard cash.

Mr Stephen Maycock, who famously presided over the sale of a drumskin featured on the cover of the Beatles' album Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band for €80,000, will hold court at Sotheby's Irish office in Molesworth Street from 10.30 a.m. next Monday.

The public are invited to bring rare or signed posters, concert tickets, programmes and other items for valuation.

Sotheby's is especially keen to acquire posters and programmes from the Beatles' only Irish performance, in the Adelphi cinema, Dublin, in 1963. An autographed ticket for the show could fetch upwards of €8,000 at a Sotheby's rock auction next December.

He said: "Rock memorabilia covers anything from Elvis to Oasis. I'll be keeping an open mind.

"The thing about valuation days is that you never know what will come through the door."

However, Sotheby's is distinctly lukewarm about memorabilia spawned by the twin touchstones of Irish music - U2 and Thin Lizzy.

To add insult to injury, vinyl junkies have been warned that their collections are practically worthless to Sotheby's.

Mr Maycock said: "Most people who have been buying records for the past 30 to 40 years will have collected stuff that everyone else has. It's second-hand record stuff." The 2FM DJ and long-time U2 acquaintance, Dave Fanning, was saddened to hear that his stockpile of band memorabilia doesn't rank highly with Sotheby's.

He told The Irish Times: "I have a demo cassette featuring a hand-drawn cover by Bono and three songs that have never been subsequently recorded.

"I might have been tempted to trade it in - if the price was right!"

U2 diehards need not despair however. Those few who have somehow laid their hands upon a mint pressing of the group's debut 12 inch, U2-3, can expect it to fetch close to €1,000 on Internet auction sites.

Mr Maycock will be available for consultation at Sotheby's, 16 Molesworth Street, Dublin next Monday between 10.30 a.m. and 4.30 p.m.
