Thirteen people were killed in a vehicle pile-up in Johannesburg today, the South Africa Press Association said (SAPA).
SAPA reported that five people died at the scene when a car overturned and hit an embankment, before bouncing back on to the road, causing a pile-up of cars travelling behind.
A further eight people died in hospital after the crash which happened early this morning.
South Africa's roads are among the most dangerous in the world with road accidents killing about 10,000 people each year, despite an infrastructure that is the envy of the African continent.
