At least 22 people have died and over 45 have been seriously injured after a bus overturned and rolled down a cliff in South Africa's eastern KwaZulu-Natal province.

The bus, which overturned after a tyre burst, narrowly missed an oncoming entourage that was carrying one of the wives of Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini.

The bus, operated by a private company, had been carrying about 70 passengers from the town of Newcastle to Nongoma when the accident happened, a police spokesman said.

South Africa's roads are notoriously dangerous, with one of the highest death tolls in the world. Road accidents kill about 10,000 people in about 500,000 crashes annually.
