Refuse charges for hundreds of thousands of residents across south Dublin will increase by a third this week bringing their annual bin collection costs to €416.

South Dublin County Council is increasing its charge for emptying a large bin from €6 to €8 a tag, while the price of tags for small bins is increasing from €3 to €4.

This is the first time south Dublin has increased the waste management charge since the introduction of pay-per-use in 2004.

Unlike its neighbouring local authority areas of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown and Dublin City, South Dublin County Council charges no annual flat fee for its refuse collection service.

The new charges are necessary because of increased disposal costs, the council says, however, it adds that the charge does not cover the total costs and that its service is the second cheapest in the country.

It lies just behind Fingal County Council, which also has no fixed charge. Charges in Fingal increased last January from €6 to €7.50 for tags for large bins and from €3 to €3.75 for the smaller bins.

Dublin City Council also increased its refuse collection charges in January.

The annual charge for a large bin is now €84 with an additional charge of €5.25 every time the bin is presented for collection, for a small bin the annual charge is €68.25 with a €3.50 collection fee.

These costs are up from last year's large bin charges of €80 and €5 for each collection and the small bin charges of €65 and €3 for each collection.
