Southampton were dumped out of the FA Cup by Rotherham tonight as the first division club pulled off a shock 2-1 home third round win.
A great diving header by Richard Barker and a breakaway by John Mullin had Rotherham 2-0 up 10 minutes into the second half and although Marian Pahars pulled one back with a 70th minute penalty Rotherham defended furiously to hold out.
Rotherham, who last beat a top flight team in the competition 34 years ago, will play fellow first division club Crewe in the fourth round.
The four other premier league clubs - Chelsea, Tottenham, Bolton Wanderers and Blackburn Rovers - had no such problems as they completed comfortable victories over lower division opposition.
Chelsea beat first division Norwich City 4-0 in a replay with goals by Mario Stanic, Frank Lampard, Gianfranco Zola and Mikael Forssell to earn a home tie against West Ham United.
Tottenham won 2-0 at Coventry in a re-arranged third round tie, Gustavo Poyet and Les Ferdinand netting for Glenn Hoddle’s side.
Blackburn manager Graeme Souness made eight changes from the team which beat Charlton Athletic 4-1 in the league on Saturday, but the stand-ins proved too strong for Barnsley as Corrado Grabbi, David Dunn from the spot and Nils-Eric Johansson were on target in a 3-1 replay win.
Bolton also rested some first-teamers and had little trouble handing first division Stockport their 11th successive defeat, 4-0 away, thanks to Gudni Bergsson, Henrik Pedersen, Michael Ricketts and a Karin Fradin own goal.
