A French-registered Spanish vessel with 13 crew on board was towed to Castletownbere, Co Cork, yesterday evening after a fire on board was brought under control.
The vessel was 20 miles west of Castletownbere when the alarm was raised at 3 p.m. The Irish Marine Emergency Services Sikorsky helicopter flew to the scene from Shannon and the Castletownbere lifeboat was launched.
However, the fire was contained by battening down hatches and was reported to be smouldering as the vessel was towed to safety.
