Tottenham's vice-chairman David Buchler vowed today that the Premiership club are ready to break the bank to prevent captain Sol Campbell from leaving at the end of the season.

Campbell will be out of contract when the season ends in two weeks time but Buchler is prepared to match whatever Campbell is offered elsewhere to prevent the Tottenham captain from moving on.

Spanish giants Barcelona have reportedly offered the 26-year-old stg£100,000 a week to tempt him away from White Hart Lane.

Campbell, who is currently sidelined with an ankle problem, has so far refused to sign a new four-year deal.

"Barcelona will have a hell of a fight on their hands if they want to take Sol away," said Buchler defiantly.

"It won't be easy for them, I can promise that. We've got to show people we mean business and Sol is an integral part of that.

"He is key to our future plans. We have our sights on new players but this club will be based on youth, the youth we have coming through."

Campbell has already opened talks about a new deal and Spurs boss Glenn Hoddle remains hopeful they can tie him down to a new deal.

"Dialogue is taking place and where there is dialogue there is hope," said Hoddle. - AFP
