Cricket: Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara set a world record stand of 624 as Sri Lanka punished South Africa on day three of the first Test.
Sri Lanka, in reply to South Africa's first innings score of 169, had raced on to 720 for three by the end of the afternoon session.
Jayawardene and Sangakkara had contributed the vast majority of those runs, coming together at 14 for two but then taking the score on to 638 before Sangakkara became the third man out, giving Mark Boucher a catch off Andrew Hall's bowling and falling for 287 as he attempted a drive outside the off stump.
However, Jayawardene was still unbeaten on 357 at the break and was 44 runs away from eclipsing the mark set by Brian Lara for the West Indies against England in 2004 - the Trinidadian had made 400 not out.
Jayawardene and Sangakkara broke the record of 576 set by Sri Lankan team-mate Sanath Jayasuriya and the now retired Roshan Mahanama back in 1997 against India, also in Colombo.
They also eclipsed the all-time first-class record of 577 set by VS Hazare and Gul Muhammad for the fourth wicket in the match between Baroda and Holkar in 1946/47.
The partnership came to an end at 624 when Sangakkara was caught behind off Hall for 287 following a knock that included 35 fours.
Sri Lanka have a first innings lead of 551.
