Actor Joe Lynch, who died on Wednesday aged 76, will be cremated in Spain next week, it was confirmed yesterday.

Actor Joe Lynch, who died on Wednesday aged 76, will be cremated in Spain next week, it was confirmed yesterday.

The cremation is due to take place on Tuesday near Mr Lynch's holiday home in Alicante, where he fell ill.

It has yet to be announced whether a memorial service will subsequently take place in Ireland.

Paying tribute to the actor yesterday, Mr Cathal Goan, the director of RTE television, said "he occupied a special place in the public imagination. We note with appreciation the great contribution he made to Irish television".

From Mallow, Co Cork, Mr Lynch worked on stage and screen in Britain and Ireland but was best known for his role as Dinny Byrne in the soap operas Bracken and Glenroe.
