A stampede has left at least ten people dead and dozens more injured in Japan after a crush of people returning from a fireworks display at Akashi in Hyogo prefecture caused people to fall at a pedestrian bridge near a local station.

A 71-year-old woman, a seven-year-old boy and another woman were among the dead, according to firefighters at the scene.

About 130,000 had attended the fireworks display on the second day of a three-day holiday weekend.

Up to 100 people were injured, some seriously. Many of the injured were taken to nearby hospitals.
