Minister for Justice Alan Shatter said Ireland would accept up to 10 Libyan refugees from Malta as part of the effort to ease the burden on the Mediterranean island from people fleeing the turmoil in Libya.

The Government has already accepted 36 Libyans from other reception points in north Africa. Although Mr Shatter acknowledged the number of people involved was small, he said his Maltese counterpart was grateful for Ireland’s contribution.
