The State is acquiring a part of the Hill of Uisneach in Co Westmeath which contains archaeological features. Its giant Rock of Divisions, Aill na Mireann, was referred to in the 12th century by Giraldus Cambrensis as "the navel of Ireland" and there are features known as St Patrick's Bed and St Patrick's Well on the site. From its summit on a clear day, 20 counties can be seen. Part of the hill was included in a property bought recently by Mr David Clarke, of nearby Loughnavalley. Duchas - the Heritage Service - said it was "in the process of acquiring" the area of archaeological value from him.
