The cost of various tribunals is being inspected, with the Mahon Tribunal alone totalling over €12 million and the hepatitis C and HIV Compensation Tribunal costing more than €500 million.

Barristers in the Mahon tribunal have taken in the vast portion of the €12 million cost over the past two years, with fees to date totalling €7.2 million.

Figures released to the Irish Independent under the Freedom of Information Act reveal that fees rose from €3 million in 2002 to just over €4 million last year.

On December 1st, 2003, the cost reparation paid to those who contracted hepatitis C and HIV from blood transfusions stood at over €460 million.

Legal and other costs were an additional €75 million.

It is expected the final cost for settling claims arising from the scandal will be significantly higher because several hundred claims of the 1,800 applications received by the tribunal remain outstanding.
