The site of the Battle of the Boyne is to be purchased by the Government with an immediate investment of £150,000, the Taoiseach, Mr Ahern, has announced.

In a statement yesterday, Mr Ahern said the Government had agreed "in principle" to the purchase and development of the site in a way that would reflect its "huge historical importance", particularly for the unionist tradition in the North.

The Taoiseach said the Battle of the Boyne was one of the most important events in the island's history and, indeed, had a wider European significance.

"It should be remembered and understood by all of us," he said.

A special inter-departmental committee has been requested to bring forward proposals for the development of the site with a £150,000 investment in public access, visitor facilities and information material.

Mr Ahern said the Government would continue to consult closely with representatives of the unionist tradition, the relevant local authorities and community groups about its plans for the development of the site.
