The Government is expected to announce today whether it will release the VAT on the new Live Aid DVD which went on general release yesterday.

Fianna Fáil TD Mr Barry Andrews yesterday called on the Government to return the tax take on the DVD.

The call comes following a move earlier yesterday by the British Chancellor, Mr Gordon Brown, to return VAT paid on the DVD and CD of the 1985 concert.

Mr Andrews said: "Twenty years ago when the original single went on sale the government here led the way in ensuring that every penny spent by Irish consumers went to the aid operation in Ethiopia.

"Today the need for such funding is just as great in many parts of the continent, including the Darfur region of Sudan.

"By returning the VAT from the sales of the DVD and CD, the Government would boost Band Aid's takings in the Republic by over 20 per cent.

"With the re-released CD hotly tipped to take the Christmas number one, clearly the actual cash figure will be significant," Mr Andrews said.

Dublin rocker and Live Aid organiser Bob Geldolf called on governments around the world to make the money available to once again help those in dire need in Africa.

Speaking yesterday, he said: "No government should take money from the mouths of the hungry. Put pressure on your politicians to make that money available for those who really need it."

Dublin music store HMV said that in its first day the DVD had sold "very well".
