The following statement was issued by Mr Aengus Fanning, editor of the Sunday Independent:

Mr Jimmy Guerin's statement issued today contains numerous inaccuracies of fact and does a disservice to the memory of Veronica Guerin.

It is not true to say that pressure was applied on Veronica to "produce controversial newspaper articles on crime" at the expense of her personal safety.

On the contrary, neither the Sunday Independent nor Veronica was careless nor in any way irresponsible about her personal safety.

Veronica's investigative journalism carried with it obvious risks, of which both she herself and I were acutely conscious.

We in the Sunday Independent, on many occasions, discussed with both Veronica and the Garda the, question of her safety, and at various times measures were put in place to minimise these risks.

Veronica on several occasions was offered alternative employment on the newspaper, an offer she declined.

Mr Fanning later added: "Neither I nor any other executive of the Sunday Independent received any communication whatever from Jimmy Guerin at any time before Veronica's death. I am issuing this in addition to my earlier statement, in response to Mr Guerin's assertion, reported on this evening's TV news bulletins, that he had "sought legal advice seven months before Veronica died to see if I could force her employers to act in a more responsible manner".

We were never at any time before Veronica's death aware of Mr Guerin's concern.
