Three Belfast stockbrokers were awarded substantial libel damages and an apology in the Northern Ireland High Court yesterday. Mr Nigel Cheevers, Mr Gavin Graham and Mr Brian Corry sued Century Newspapers Ltd over an article in the News Letter which suggested they had been sacked by the firm of B.W.D.Rensburg.
An apology read out in court said it was acknowledged they resigned of their own accord to set up their own investment business and fulfilled their contractual obligations to their former employer. A lawyer said Century Newspapers unreservedly apologised to the plaintiffs and had agreed to pay them a substantial sum by way of damages and costs. The amount was not disclosed.
