A 19-year-old man found dead in the back seat of a car on the main Cork road at Croom, Co Limerick, early on Saturday morning died instantly of massive internal injuries, a post-mortem has found.

Gardai have learned from witnesses that the dead man, Mr Luke McEvoy, of Talbot Avenue, Prospect, had been a front-seat passenger in a car which had been stolen earlier in Charleville and was on its way to Limerick when it crashed through a hedge and finished up in a field near Banogue.

Gardai had been alerted but when they went to the scene shortly after 2.30 a.m. they could not find anybody near the wrecked vehicle. Five hours later an ambulance received a call from persons stating that they were taking an accident victim to the Limerick Regional Hospital. When the ambulance was flagged down near the scene by the occupants of the oncoming car they indicated the body in the back of the vehicle.
