Straightforward wins for Federer and Capriati

Defending champion Roger Federer made up for lost time with a straight-sets victory over Sweden's Thomas Johansson on "People's Sunday" at Wimbledon.

The world number one had waited 24 hours to get his match under way but he took just one hour 38 minutes to wrap up a 6-3 6-4 6-3 third-round victory over an outclassed opponent.

Federer began cautiously but gradually moved ominously through the gears to put out the 2002 Australian Open champion and earn a standing ovation from the 11,000 fans in carnival mood on Centre Court.

His routine victory made it 20 consecutive wins on grass and he has lost just 19 games in his three straight-sets successes so far in the championship.

Meanwhile, Jennifer Capriati moved a step closer to a possible quarter-final showdown with Serena Williams by seeing off Nathalie Dechy in straight sets on a half-empty court one.

The number seven seed took just one hour and 12 minutes to despatch her French opponent, who has now lost all five encounters with the American.

Dechy handed Capriati an early advantage with a double fault at break point down in her first service game but recovered to break to the American's serve before dropping the first set 7-5.

And she never recovered, as Capriati began to dominate in the second, storming to a 3-0 lead with another early break.

The 25th seed managed to save two break points against her serve in the sixth game but could not save a third after allowing Capriati back into the game with two double faults.

The American has never won Wimbledon, but is gathering momentum at just the right time and she served out the match imperiously at 5-1.

Capriati will now advance to face Russian Nadia Petrova, the 10th seed, in the fourth round after her straight sets victory over Tatiana Perebiynis.
