CORK CITY Council engineers are to prepare a report into the collapse of a building which forced the closure of Shandon Street for several hours yesterday as workmen cleared away debris and made the area safe.

The incident happened at about 12.30pm at No 38 Shandon Street as workmen were carrying out renovation work on No 39, with debris falling on to the street and smashing the back window of an unoccupied parked car. The emergency services were alerted and several units of Cork City Fire Brigade attended, while gardaí closed off Shandon Street and Dominic Street.

City council engineers assessed the situation and ordered the demolition of No 37 which had become unstable as a result of the collapse at No 38, and workmen spent the afternoon demolishing the building and clearing up the debris.

A Garda spokesman confirmed that the street remained closed until about 6pm. "It was a serious incident but thankfully there were no pedestrians in the area at the time and all the workmen got out from the adjacent building before the collapse so no one was injured."
