There is strict security surrounding this week's visit of Prince Charles, which has been cut short following the death of his aunt, Princess Margaret.

The official visit is expected to be confined to the greater Dublin area. A planned visit to the Burren, Co Clare, will not go ahead because Prince Charles is returning to Britain for his aunt's funeral on Friday.

A spokesman for the British Embassy said yesterday that for security reasons the details of his itinerary will not be made known until tomorrow.

The Prince is to meet the Taoiseach, Mr Ahern, on Thursday afternoon. On Friday morning he is expected to visit the Glencree Centre for Peace and Reconciliation in Co Wicklow, to officially open a new extension.

He is due to leave on Friday afternoon.

The heir to the throne's plan to visit Ireland last year was cancelled because of foot-and-mouth disease in the UK. It will be Prince Charles's second visit to the State. He first visited Ireland in June 1995.
