A Galway medical student rescued a motorist from a lake in north-east Galway after a car went out of control.
The student, believed to be from Corrandulla, was travelling with her father in the Kilkerrin area yesterday when they saw the car going into the lake. The young woman jumped in and pulled the driver to safety. The driver was taken to Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe and was reported to be in shock, but recovering, yesterday.
Weather was severe at the time with high winds and heavy rain.
Men released after Athlone stabbing
Two Athlone men arrested in connection with a stabbing in the town centre early on Saturday morning have been released without charge.
One of the men was recently released from jail. Gardaí said a file would be prepared and sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
A Dublin man, in his early 40s, was stabbed in the neck and throat shortly before 5 a.m. He was "serious but stable" in Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe, yesterday, after undergoing surgery. The man's partner witnessed the attack but was not injured.
Bus services return to normal
Bus services in the west of Dublin returned to normal yesterday after an unofficial strike by drivers during the morning.
The action affected route numbers 25, 25A, 25, 66, 66A, 66B, 66X, 67 and 67A. These buses serve the west of the city including Kilmainham, Chapelizod and Lucan.
A Dublin Bus spokeswoman said the unofficial action lasted about three hours. She said that yesterday morning the temporary terminus at Wood Quay for these buses was relocated to its permanent stop at Pearse Street.
Loughrea bypass gets under way
The Minister for Transport, Mr Brennan, will turn the first sod on the long-awaited €20 million Loughrea bypass today.
The project is expected to be finished by late 2005, and will link the proposed N6 between Dublin and Galway.
