Third-level students spend an average of €157 a week, according to a survey published by Ulster Bank yesterday.
The research, which was carried out earlier this year, shows that the average cost of living for Irish third-level students stands at €157 a week.
Students spend almost €6,300 during the academic year on accommodation, travel, groceries and socialising.
More than half of that yearly outlay is provided by parents, with a third coming from part-time employment.
Third-level students living away from home spend 42 per cent of their income on rent, with the average monthly rent being €293.
The second-highest proportion of their income, 29 per cent, is spent on socialising.
But, according to the survey, students who live away from home spend 8 per cent less on their social lives than those who live at home.
The survey was carried out in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway and Waterford.
