The new union representing thousands of secondary school students has clashed publicly for the first time with the Minister for Education, Dr Woods.

The Union of Secondary Students (USS), formed last year during the controversial ASTI dispute, said Dr Woods and his officials had promised them an office, but had failed to deliver.

A spokesman for USS, which outlined a range of demands to the education partners over recent weeks, said the Minister had promised the office at the recent ASTI annual conference in Bundoran, Co Donegal.

A USS statement said the head of the Department, in a later telephone call, said he had found an office and the union would have access to it in a few days.

However, USS spokesman Mr Daire Hickey said nothing had happened since then and despite promises there had been no contact with USS.

"Unfortunately this person never made any contact with the USS, and despite his comments in an earlier telephone conversation that we should work together, and have respect for each other, he has yet to show respect for this organisation. Their attitude towards the union is discourteous. The USS wants action and not promises," the statement said.

A spokesman for the Department said the Minister was most anxious to get an office for USS and had spoken to them on the fringes of the ASTI conference. He said the arrangements to secure the office were being finalised and outstanding issues should be concluded shortly.

The USS has raised its profile in education circles in the last few months and it regards getting an office as an important part of becoming a prominent national organisation.
