JUNIOR CERT MUSIC AND TECHNOLOGY:"WELL-PITCHED" was how one teacher described yesterday's Junior Certificate music paper, as students were asked to analyse works including the theme from the Harry Potter films and Simon and Garfunkel's hit 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy).

“Students were smiling coming out of the exam,” said Mary McFadden of the ASTI. “It seems to have hit the right note with students who had done their listening and practised their composing skills.” Other topics on yesterday’s paper included the William Tell Overture by Gioachino Rossini and the Belfast Harp Festival.

More than 10,000 students took yesterday’s music exam at both levels. The ordinary level paper was also well-received. Twice as many girls as boys take music at Junior Cert level.

The afternoon technology exams were well received. TUI representative Liam Walsh, a teacher in Castleknock Community College, praised the choice of questions on the higher-level paper.
