The Union of Students in Ireland has asked that all third-level colleges be closed tomorrow to allow students to return home to vote, and suggested students should walk out in protest if colleges are not closed.

Since last July USI has been calling for the election to be held on a Friday to facilitate student voters.

In a statement yesterday the USI president, Mr Colman Byrne, said such a protest would show "those involved in the election that 41 per cent of the population cannot be treated in such an appalling manner".
