Sturrock unveiled as Wednesday boss

Paul Sturrock was unveiled as Sheffield Wednesday's new manager this morning - their 10th in nine years

Paul Sturrock was unveiled as Sheffield Wednesday's new manager this morning - their 10th in nine years. Sturrock, who has signed a three-year contract, succeeds Chris Turner who was sacked by the Coca-Cola League One side following Saturday's home defeat to Bournemouth.

The 47-year-old Scot was sacked by Southampton last month but before that built a strong reputation by steering Plymouth to the Third Division title in 2002. He also laid the groundwork for the Pilgrims' Second Division championship success last season before joining Saints in March this year.

Sturrock will be joined at Hillsborough by Kevin Summerfield, his number two at Plymouth and Southampton, and he immediately set his sights on steering the Owls, currently languishing in 14th place after nine games, to promotion.

He said: "You play football to win and the aim for this season is promotion. This is a huge club. It may not be a Premiership team at this moment in time but the crowd and the stadium are in place."

Wednesday chairman Dave Allen said: "We were contacted by dozens of candidates who were interested in being the Sheffield Wednesday manager but I am in no doubt we have made the right choice in Paul Sturrock.

"Paul has a proven track record of high achievement in this division and will provide us with the qualities necessary for success this season."
