Khartoum - Sudanese government forces regained control of Kassala, on the border with Eritrea, yesterday. A spokesman for the rebel National Democratic Alliance (NDA) confirmed that the government was in control of Kassala after what he described as an "organised withdrawal" of rebel forces who had captured the city before dawn on Wednesday.
He said the NDA had killed more than 400 government soldiers, "demolished" all government military garrisons and command posts around Kassala and captured 13 tanks and 2,000 rifles.
