Indonesia's former President Suharto failed to turn up yesterday at the attorney-general's office in Jakarta for questioning over alleged corruption.

Mr Juan Felix Tampubolon, head of Gen Suharto's defence team, said doctors for the 78-year-old former leader had said he could not cope with what would have been his first interrogation.

Gen Suharto had a stroke last year and has appeared frail in public, but he is widely believed to retain considerable political and economic influence.

The attorney-general's office demanded an official medical statement from doctors for Gen Suharto, whose family is reputed to have amassed a huge fortune during the 32 years he was in office. Gen Suharto was named a suspect last week in an inquiry into corruption at charities he controlled.
