Turkey's Hakan Sukur scored the fastest goal in World Cup history today, netting after approximately 10 seconds in their third-place playoff match with South Korea.
Sukur fired home past Korean keeper Lee Woon-Jae following an error by Korean defensive stalwart and skipper Hong Myung-Bo.
If the official time keeper confirms the time of the goal, Sukur's effort would be even faster than Czechoslovakia's Vaclav Masek, who netted after just 15 seconds against Mexico in 1962.
Korea levelled in the ninth minute with a terrific 25-yard free-kick from Lee Eul-yong, whipping the ball left-footed over the Turkish wall and into the top corner, brushing the post on the way.
However, another lapse in the Korean rearguard allowed Ilhan to restore Turkey’s lead and the striker extended that advantage on 32 minutes to establish a 3-1 lead.
